Emerging opportunities in the Green Economy

20 March 2023: The future is unavoidably sustainable. Across the Asia-Pacific, governments are investing in greener economic growth and development. This presents an enormous opportunity for Australian innovation and talent – if business leaders are ready to take on the challenge.

Asia is, and will continue to be, the world’s biggest market for renewable energy investment, according to a 2022 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit. By 2031, the share of non-hydro renewable energy is expected to rise from 15% to 26% in China, 11% to 21% in India, and from 7.5% to 19.5% in South Korea.

Australia’s strong framework of research incentives, broad talent base, established green finance infrastructure, and our network of free trade agreements in the region give us a competitive advantage for collaboration and investment in Asia’s green growth.

Unfortunately, environmental policy is often intricate and even confusing. It can be intimidating to align products and services to the incentives and regulations of foreign governments. The public and private sectors need to work together to create effective and intuitive policies for sustainable growth.

Because Asia capability increasingly means being aware of environmental issues and tapping into green growth opportunities, Asialink Business is building the green economy into our mission, to help Australia develop an Asia-capable workforce.

Our upcoming programs will help Australian businesses bring Australian innovation to the Asia region, while being aware of environmental, social, and governance risks and opportunities, and help policymakers in Asian nations build globally-aware environmental policies.

These programs will include:

  • New topical research, including an upcoming series of white papers on the green economy key Asian markets – beginning with Singapore and India. These papers will dive into the diverse and unique opportunities created by sustainable development.
  • Tailored capability development, such as the upcoming “Green Economy in Asia” courses in the newly launched Asialink Business Academy. These courses will prepare the Australian workforce to do business in the complex markets and policy environments of Asia.
  • Industry-connecting roundtables, like the ‘Connecting Clean Technology’ Program, which will match Australian clean technology innovation to opportunities in Asia. By linking businesses with manufacturers, buyers, and fellow innovators in the region, we can ensure Australia is a key player in Asia’s ongoing clean energy transition long into the future.
